Meet Josey

Josey Hu

Co-Lead for College Admissions & Financial Aid (CAFA)

Meet our phenomenal volunteer, Josey Hu! She joined Minds Matter during the 2022–23 Program Year and has contributed meaningfully to our mission of helping high-achieving, low-income students pursue the colleges of their dreams. MMBay helps our mentees secure significant financial aid in the form of merit- and need-based scholarships, so that cost isn’t a barrier and debt remains low.

Navigating the college application process can also be challenging for the low-income and/or first-generation students. However, Josey and her team has provided tremendous support to our Senior Class so our students can experience transformational change in their own access to opportunity.

“I believe in the power of education as a means of reducing inequality, and I want to do my part to tackle specific education issues surrounding resource and teaching gaps in local communities.”

What Goes on During the Saturday Sessions With the Students You Work With? Every other Saturday session, the CAFA team comes in person to address students’ pressing needs. Every session is different depending on upcoming events and deadlines. For example, in the fall, we host presentations and discussions that cater more towards seniors on the FAFSA and CSS Profile applications so students can get on top of need-based financial aid, as well as answering all related questions for the UC and CSU applications, Common Application for private schools, and personal statements. This winter, we’ve been focused on bringing both the juniors and seniors up to speed on various merit-based scholarships.

What Inspired You to Become an Instructor? I believe in the power of education as a means of reducing inequality, and I want to do my part to tackle specific education issues surrounding resource and teaching gaps in local communities by pushing for tutoring and mentorship to help students navigate the jump to higher education. Minds Matter’s mission to connect low-income, driven high school students with the right people and preparation to succeed in college is incredibly inspiring and aligns with my volunteer aspirations perfectly, and I’ve been so excited to contribute my skills and experience to the CAFA team at Minds Matter in person every Saturday and offline.
