Cathy Ton

Minds Matter Mentor

Meet our long-time volunteer, Cathy Ton! For the past 4 years, Cathy has spent her Saturdays as a mentor for Minds Matter San Francisco. Our mentors are dedicated to producing exceptional results for our mentees, 100% of whom come from low-income backgrounds, and 91% of whom are the first in their families to go to college!

“MMSF has given me the opportunity to become a guiding light to these amazing students, something that I wished I had growing up.”

What Is Your Favorite Minds Matter Memory? My favorite part of Minds Matter is the relationship I've built with my mentees. From the first meeting till their graduation date, it's so incredible to see how much they have grown as a person and a student. You get to see all of the hard work and difficulties each student has and you just want to help them reach all of their goals so badly. Over time, I've built a level of trust and friendship between me and my mentees that I know will exist beyond this program/graduation. Also, I've bonded with other amazing mentors in Minds Matter that have enriched my life as well.

What Does Minds Matter Mean to You? Growing up, I was also a low income, first generation student myself. I know first hand how difficult it can be to get the resources that I need to succeed and grow. In my own way, being a part of Minds Matter is paying it forward to the students that faced similar environments as I did.
