program overview

SIP is a summer-long (10 week) research internship program for high-school students in STEM fields. UCSC faculty, graduate students, and post-doctoral researchers provide one-on-one mentoring of these high-school interns. The research projects are real in that they are not made up just for the high-school students; instead students are inserted into existing research projects here at UCSC.

Note:  Students should be at least 14 years of age on the program start date of June 6 (at least 16 years of age for certain research project placements) and currently enrolled in high school. While many SIP interns are “rising seniors” (in the summer between junior and senior year), this is not a requirement. For further questions, email

Duration: 10 weeks; housing on UCSC campus is offered for Week 3 - 10. For Week 1 - 2, students have the option of commuting to UC Santa Cruz campus once a week and getting online support from mentors and instructors.
